Dr Stephen Wilkinson AM

Stephen Wilkinson was Director of Surgery at the Royal Hobart Hospital at the time of the Port Arthur tragedy. He was directing an EMST course in Hobart on the day of the shooting. He was responsible for the surgical component of the external disaster response of the hospital and was able to recruit newly trained EMST participants and faculty to assist. He was utilized as a hospital spokesperson to the press in the aftermath.
Dr Wilkinson is a general, bariatric and breast/endocrine surgeon in Hobart, is currently MAC Chair at the Hobart Private Hospital, and runs the Docs for a Day healthy outreach program to schoolchildren for the Department of Surgery at the RHH. He runs the Process Communication (PCM) course program for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, which teaches communication skills based on better understanding of self-psychodynamics and differences in perception and distress patterns of others.
